Master Gardener teaches introductory gardening principles to 9 pictured workshop attendees. They are separated by a table which has seed packets and other gardening supplies for demonstration.

On Saturday, October 10th, the jane b semel HCI Community Garden hosted its first workshop of the 2026-2027 academic year! With the fall growing season approaching and a new plot holders on the horizon, we welcomed community members to learn the basics of gardening.

Led by Master Gardeners Claire Gerard and Deborah Hartnett, the workshop explored essential gardening skills, including proper watering techniques, how to get the most out of their seeds, and ways to manage unwanted visitors in the garden.

The learning didn’t stop there! Attendees put their new skills into practice by starting their own plants from seed and propagating a green onion. It was a fun, hands-on way to build confidence and get excited about the growing season ahead.

Everyone had a great time learning, sharing, and getting their hands dirty. We’re grateful to the Master Gardeners and all who joined us, and we look forward to more opportunities to grow together!
