2022 Year End Celebration: 10 Years Together

Reimagining Kerckhoff Patio

On May 25, 2022, Semel HCI celebrates 10 Years Together and in partnership with ASCULA, the official kick-off of the newly redesigned Kerckhoff Patio!

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of outdoor public spaces as people find creative ways to study, learn, socialize and work. In 2021, the BEWell Pod of Semel HCI led a series of focus groups with UCLA students to better understand their needs for outdoor public spaces. Students shared wanting outdoor study spaces with electrical outlets and flexible seating arrangements to accommodate a variety needs from socializing to working.

The #KerckhoffPatioReimagined Project has been developed through student input and stakeholder engagement over the course of the 2020-2021 academic year to meet these student well-being requests for an active and engaging outdoor space at Kerckhoff Patio that fosters social connectedness, belonging, and community while acting as a hub to increase access to health and well-being resources.

Over spring break 2021, months of hard work came to fruition with the installation of new furniture from RAD, a local and sustainable furniture manufacturer, in Kerckhoff Patio. (Read more about this in the article below).

As our world becomes more divisive, spaces that foster non-judgmental cross-disciplinary conversations among the larger body of students, faculty, staff, and community members that make up the UCLA campus are critically important. By creating a welcoming space for all at Kerckhoff Patio, together we are fostering a more empathetic and empowered Bruin community, on campus and beyond.

With much gratitude for the students, staff and faculty from Architecture and Arts, Urban Planning, Public Health, Social Work, Capital Programs, Transportation and Events, and ASUCLA.
